Educational institutions are meant to create individuals and leaders of impeccable character, who can guide the society at large, on the path of self-realization. The role of a well-rounded education in shaping an individual’s personality and character cannot be understated. There is a growing recognition and concern that modern education, with its emphasis on the mundane and neglect of the spiritual essence of a living being, falls miserably short of providing a wholesome education that caters to the spiritual aspect of an individual. In a letter to a disciple, Srila Prabhupada wrote about the importance of a spirituality-based education.
In every college and university all over the world, there are so many different courses available to help the student become more entangled in the material world and to forget his real occupation. But none of them offer any instructions in the nature of spirit soul and his relation with the Supreme Soul. So our program at these colleges is so important, because we are giving all these young people an opportunity to develop real knowledge and make their lives successful. I am so pleased to know that all of you are very enthusiastic for pushing on this program.” – April 22, 1972
Recognizing this urgent need, Srila Romapada Swami, who himself came in contact with Krishna conscious devotees as a college student, through his constant travels to Universities around the world, has spearheaded the creation of numerous Krishna-conscious student organizations. These students groups in reputed institutions such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Penn State University, Tufts University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, Southern Methodist University, and others have come to fill the gap left by our modern educational systems and are transforming the lives of many.
In the parched desert of materialistic environment in today’s Universities, these student groups truly serve as oases for the inquisitive minds. Through an attractive combination of philosophy, food, music, yoga and festivals, these groups have successfully attracted intellectuals from various cultures and backgrounds to the transcendental messages and practices of Krishna consciousness.
